Abstract

6 - Nitro - 4 - keto - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - tetrahydro - 2 - naphthoic acid is manufactured by nitrating 4 - keto - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 - tetrahydro - 2 - naphthoic acid. In an example, the nitration is effected with a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid and the product is isolated by pouring the reaction mixture on to ice and filtering. 4 - Hydroxy - 6 - nitro - 2 - naphthoic acid is obtainable by brominating 6 - nitro - 4 - keto - 1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydro-2-naphthoic acid and dehydrohalogenating the product with diethylaniline. 6 - Amino - 4 - naphthol - 2 - carboxylic acid is obtainable by reduction of 4-hydroxy-6-nitro-2-naphthoic acid, e.g. with gaseous hydrogen in the presence of Raney nickel in alcoholic medium. 4-Nitrophthalic acid is obtainable by oxidation of 6-nitro-4-keto-1 : 2 : 3 : 4-tetrahydro-2-naphthoic acid in alkaline permanganate solution.
