Abstract

Xanthene-9-carboxylic acid is prepared by heating xanthydrol with hydrogen cyanide in glacial acetic acid under pressure to form 9-cyanoxanthene which is then hydrolysed. The hydrogen cyanide may be formed by using sodium or potassium cyanide with the glacial acetic acid. Mineral acid may be added to the reaction mixture, e.g. sulphuric acid. The 9-cyanoxanthene may be isolated and purified before hydrolysis or may be hydrolysed as the crude reaction product. Acid or alkaline hydrolysis is referred to-alkaline hydrolysis in an alcoholic solution being preferred, e.g. with sodium or potassium hydroxide. Two detailed examples are given.
