Abstract

651,542. Girders ; floors ; walls; building units. PERRY, A. R., and BUILDING TECHNIQUE, Ltd. May 19,1948, No. 13522. [Classes 20(iv) and 87(i)] Beamlike elements as for flooring or used on end for walling are made by moulding concrete &c. on flexible sheeting, e.g. impermeable paper or metal, or sheet material such as wallboard, supported upon and freely suspended from metal side plates which are connected by spacing members and constitute shuttering. Flooring units, e.g. 12-20 in. wide and up to 12 feet long, comprise side sections 1 of sheet steel with longitudinal dovetail grooves 2 and internal spacing rods, angles &c. 3, supporting impermeable paper sheeting 4 preferably in the form of a continuous band wrapped round the framing at one end of the unit and the two ends being tensioned at the other by a roller carried on an end mould member. Reinforcement, e.g. expanded or stamped sheet metal 14, may be laid on the paper and concrete is then applied to the level of the side sections on one side and when this has hardened to the other. To prevent the paper sagging, longitudinally arranged light metal ribbon may be stretched round the unit. A succession of units may be propelled to moulding, vibrating, levelling, and drying stations by the engagement in the grooves 2 of rollers supported on horizontal axes from longitudinal frames providing the runway. Asbestos board or other wallboard &c. may replace the paper support and may be gripped in grooves in the side sections so as to be outwardly cambered; or the spacing members may be cambered. Light metal corrugated or other sheeting may be used instead of paper. Keying apertures, stiffening ribs &c. may be provided in the side sections. In modifications the spacing rods are grouped and lapped with paper so as to delineate in section truncated triangles or rectangles, the gaps between them being filled with concrete to form struts between the two facings. In laying a floor the units are disposed side by side with a slight clearance between each pair and are locked together by clamps 41, 42, engaging in the grooves 2, and expanded as by a rod 44 having threads of opposite hand, or a single clamp with two dovetail projections may be rotated into locking position by a tommy bar. After insertion of a wallboard &c. fillet at the base of the clearance by means of a clip which engages grooves in the side sections concrete &c is filled in up to floor level.
