Abstract

A permanent shutter 1 for the edge of a concrete floor slab comprises a base 10, a channel member 16 and walls 12a and 12b, together defining an edge barrier which is connected to the rest of the floor slab shuttering. T-headed bolts slidably located in the channel member when the floor slab is in use allow fixing brackets to be attached to the edge of the slab to support brickwork. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), a single wall 19 has apertures 20 therein leading into the channel member 16. <IMAGE>

Description

"Shuttering" This invention relates to shuttering for use in casting concrete flooring.
Concrete flooring is cast on to a base which provides permanent shuttering and reinforcement. Edge barriers are required for lateral retention of the concrete and these are secured to the base plate.
Fitments may have to be secured to the cast concrete, and this is conventionally done by bolting Z-shaped brackets to the top face of the cast concrete slabs.
This requires holes to be pre-drilled to receive the fixing bolts and this can be time consuming.
According to the present invention there is provided shuttering for use in casting concrete including an edge barrier, a portion of the edge barrier being formed by a channel member which opens outwardly of the shuttering and is exposed to the exterior of the shuttering along at least a portion of its length to receive a fixing member.
Preferably, the edge barrier comprises first and second plates and a channel member, the channel member extending between the first and second plates.
Alternatively, a single plate may be provided, the plate being slotted to expose a length of the channel member therethrough.
Preferably the channel member is welded to another portion of the edge barrier.
Preferably, a top anchoring member extends from the edge barrier so as to be embedded in the concrete after the concrete has been poured.
Preferably, the channel member is in an intermediate position on the edge barrier relative to the positions of the top anchoring member and a base.
Further according to the invention there is provided an edge barrier for use in shuttering of the invention, at least a portion of the barrier comprising a channel member disposed so that in use it opens outwardly of the shuttering and is exposed to the exterior of the shuttering along at least a portion of its length to receive a fixing member.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of shuttering of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of shuttering of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, which is a first embodiment of the invention, shuttering 1 for use in casting concrete flooring comprises a base plate 10, an edge barrier generally indicated at 12 and a top anchoring member 14. The edge barrier 12 comprises two plates 12a,b and a channel member 16. The channel member 16 has an opening 17 along its length, the opening 17 having two shoulders 18a,b. The channel member 16 is welded to the two plates 12a,b at respective shoulders 18a,b so as to form a bridge between the two plates 12a,b. The opening 17 can receive a fixing member such as a T headed bolt which is retained. in the channel member by the shoulders 18a,b. Anchor legs 24 extend rearwardly from the channel member 16.
The plate 12a is bent inwardly through 90 at 11 to form abase plate 10, and the plate 12b is bent inwardly through an angle greater than 900 at 13 to form the top anchoring member 14.
In use, the edge barrier 12 of this embodiment of the invention is affixed as a side element of shuttering defining a enclosure for receiving concrete to form flooring for a building. As the concrete is poured, it is supported and contained by the base plate 10 and the edge barrier 12. When the concrete has been fully poured and has cured, the top anchoring member 14 is embedded in the concrete to provide secure fixing of the edge barrier 12, and the channel member 16 is also embedded in the concrete with its opening 17 exposed at the face of the concrete to receive the fixing member (not shown). The anchor legs 24 further resist pull-out of the channel member 16 and edge barrier 12 from the concrete. The shuttering 1 may have a plurality of edge barriers 12 and channel members 16.
In Figure 2, which is a second embodiment of shuttering 1, an edge barrier 12 comprises a single plate 19 having a channel member 16 welded to one side. The channel member 16 has an opening along its length in a face adjacent to the plate 19, the opening being exposed at apertures 20 in the plate-19. The apertures 20 allow fixing members such as T headed bolts (not shown) to be inserted into and retained within the channel member 16.
The plate 19 is bent through 90" at 11 to form a base plate 10 which extends from the same side of the edge barrier 12 as the channel member 16.
The plate 19 is bent at an angle greater that 900 at 13 to form a top anchoring member 14, which extends from the same side of the edge barrier 12 as the channel member 16.
In use, concrete is poured into an enclosure defined by the shuttering 1 with the edge barriers 12 laterally retaining the concrete, the base plate 10 supporting the concrete underneath and the top anchor member 14 and anchor legs 24 embedded in the concrete for security. Once the concrete is cast, T headed bolts are slidably located in the channel member 16 at any position exposed to the exterior of the shuttering 1 Fixing brackets are then attached to the bolts which can support for example two or three storey height of brickwork (not shown).
The channel member 16 being welded to the plates 12a, b, 19 to form part of the barrier 12, is embedded in the concrete and therefore obviates the need to drill holes for bolts to secure the fixing brackets.
