Abstract

651,500. Springs. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Oct. 21, 1948, No. 27415. [Class 108(iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Sinusoidal springs 3, 4 of the kind described in Specification 617,076, having little or no resistance centrally to deflection normal to the line joining their ends, are used to form a flexible shaft coupling, the springs being clamped together at their centres by a member 7 and connected at their ends to the respective shafts by Y brackets 5, 6 thereon. The member 7 may be a cylinder with crossed slots, one in each end, to take the springs, which may either have freedom of movement in the plane of their slots about pin bearings, or may be rigidly clamped therein. Alternatively the member 7 may be a blade twisted through a right-angle at its centre and joined rigidly to the springs at its ends, or, according to the Provisional Specification, a flat blade may be incorporated in the member. Formulae are given to determine, for a fixed distance between the points where a spring is connected to its bracket, both the length of spring required to provide any desired amount of bowing therein, and, with the required bowing also decided, the angle of set of the spring ends necessary to cause the spring to take up a symmetrical formation. The effect of shape and dimensional variations on spring stiffness is discussed.
