Abstract

651,489. Shock-absorbers. ADAMSON, S. B. May 25, 1948, Nos. 14082 and 23335. [Class 108(iii)] A shock-absorber for vehicles mounted on springs comprises a casing rigidly fixed to the chassis of the vehicle, upper and lower leaf springs mounted in the casing and a pivot member between the leaf springs and connected to the wheel axle so that movement of the wheel axle rotates the pivot member to deflect the leaf springs. In the arrangement shown, a shallow casing 1, adapted to be secured to a vehicle, chassis, houses two sets of flat leaf springs 5, 5, the ends of which bear in steel lined recesses 7, 7. A pivot member 3, carried on an axle 4 in bearings in the casing 1 and a cover plate is pivotally connected, outside the casing, to a wheel axle, so that the relative movements of the axle and chassis deflects one or the other of the leaf springs 5. A spiral spring 6, bears on each leaf spring 5, through a disc having a diametrically raised portion which bears over the full width of the leaf spring. The connection between the pivot member and the wheel axle, comprises a lever rigidly secured at one end to an extension of the axle 4 and lying parallel to the pivot member and pivotally connected at its other end to a connecting rod. The lower end of the connecting rod is forked to pivotally engage a sleeve which is secured through a rubber bush and a bolt, to the wheel axle, the bolt projecting from a plate secured to the axle and lying parallel thereto. The lower springs in the casing may be stiffer and the space they occupy, smaller than that for the upper springs in order to check recoil. According to the first Provisional Specification the connecting rod may constitute a rod which is screwed into an upper tubular part, to render the length of the connecting rod adjustable. The pivot member may be mounted with its axle to the right or left hand end of the casing, the lever being formed for use in either position. According to the second Provisional Specification the pivot member is formed as a substantially oval member) pivoted about its centre in bearings in the casing and cover and disposed centrally of the length of the upper and lower leaf springs. The connecting rod is made adjustable in length by being formed as two oppositely threaded rods connected together by a screwed sleeve.
