Abstract

651,423. Regulating. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1948, No. 5377. [Class 7(vi)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a fuel metering system comprising a metering orifice 26, the flow of fuel to which is controlled by a valve 23 actuated by an - engine driven centrifugal governor 15 and connected to a diaphragm 28 subject to the pressures upstream and downstream of the orifice 26, the governor weights 18 are immersed in the fuel and made so that their " effective density," i.e. the density of a solid governor weight having the same shape and volume and of uniform density throughout which would produce the same governing load as the given weight under a given centrifugal acceleration, does not exceed five times the density of the fuel. The weights may be solid and formed of light material such as magnesium or synthetic resins, or they may be hollow and formed of heavy material. Alternatively, they may be composite, Fig. 3, with a part 50 of light material and a plug 54 of heavy material such as .lead or brass. The governor 15 is driven from the shaft of a fuel supply pump 11, and the orifice 26 is controlled in accordance with boost and atmospheric pressures by a stack of capsules 31. A second metering orifice in parallel with the orifice 26 is controlled according to temperature by a needle 35 actuated by a capsule 36 in a chamber 37 connected by a pipe 38 to a temperature-responsive bulb in the engine induction pipe. A spring 39 forms a slow running adjustment for the valve 23. Specification 611,312 is referred to.
