[Classes 120(ii) and 120(iii) A method of producing a yarn package which is substantially free from tension comprises the steps of mounting on a mandrel 2 having a longitudinal rib 4, a tubular bobbin 8 having a yarn-receiving surface and a resilient wall structure provided with a gap 10 extending longitudinally of the bobbin, the bobbin being positioned on the mandrel by sliding it thereon so that the rib 4 is located in the gap 10, the mandrel and bobbin being of such relative dimensions that the inner peripheral length of the bobbin 8 measured from the edge 11 to the edge 12 of the gap is just greater than the adjacent length of the mandrel measured from face to face of the rib 4, whereby tension in the yarn wound on the bobbin cannot tighten it against the periphery of the mandrel but can only produce pressure between the edges of the gap and the faces of the rib and wherein the width of the rib is such that it determines a gap during winding which is capable, upon closing, of substantially relieving all the tension in the yarn which has been wound on the bobbin in superposed layers, the wound package then being withdrawn from the mandrel and being subjected to treatment (e.g. steaming), which, will substantially release from the yarn the winding tension forced therein, the bobbin adjusting itself, through the medium of the wall gap, to the tensional force developed in the yarn mass during the winding operation. The mandrel 2 which may be provided with an end abutment flange 3, may also be tapered. The bobbin may be provided with small projections 9 or by a coating of plastic &c. to prevent slippage of yarn wound thereon.
