Abstract
651,070. Fire-extinguishing systems. MACDONALD, I. G. Oct. 6, 1948, No. 26090. [Class 47 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a fire-extinguishing system on an aircraft, two valves 43, 44, Fig. 7, are mounted in adjacent engine nacelles 38, 39 respectively, the outlets 6 being interconnected by a pipe 45, while the outlets 5 lead to the respective engines and the inlets 4 are connected to extinguisher bottles 36, 37 respectively. The valves each comprise a flap 7, Fig. 1, spring-urged to close the inlet and adapted to engage one of two hinges 14, 15 slidable by a lever 18 so that inlet pressure moves the flap to close either outlet depending on which hinge is used. The lever is fixed to one end of a pin 19 movable by a lever 26, Fig. 6, connected through a link 27 to an armature 29 spring- urged to the position shown, in which the hinge 14 is engaged by the flap to close the outlet 6. Energization of a coil 33 aligns the armature between poles 32, thus moving the hinge 15 into engagement with the flap. Should a fire break out in one engine nacelle, e.g. 38, the pilot opens the bottles 36 and the fluid moves the flap of the valve 43 to cover the outlet 6 and flows through the outlet 5 on to the engine. If the fire is not extinguished, the pilot may energize the coil 33 of the valve 44, and movement of the armature causes an extension 48 of the link 27 to close a switch 50 which opens the bottles 37. The fluid moves the flap to close the outlet 5 and passes along the pipe 45, through the outlets 6, 5 of the valve 43 to the engine in the nacelle 38. It is stated that the outlet of one valve may be connected to the inlet of the other valve, whereby fluid from the inlet of the first valve may be directed to any one of three outlets.
