650,825. Moulds for casting aluminium sulphate melts &c. REYMERSHOLMS GAMLA INDUSTRI AKTIEBOLAG. Oct. 29, 1947, No. 28858. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1946. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XIII] Apparatus for solidifying melts, e.g. of aluminium sulphate, includes an elongated jacketed cooling mould in the form of a trough having a jacketed base 16, trunnions 2, 3 for rotatably mounting the trough to tilt about its longitudinal axis, means to circulate a cooling medium to the jacket of the trough through said trunnions, the inner faces of the mould being tapered to facilitate loosening of the solidified mass, the arrangement being such that on inversion of the mould the solidified bar will fall out and by impact against a bed or base plate will be broken into pieces. The inner base of the mould has ridges 4 which produce indentations in the bar and facilitate breaking. The trunnions are so positioned with respect to the centre of gravity of the mould that it is in stable equilibrium when empty and in unstable equilibrium when full. Aluminium sulphate is poured, molten in its water of crystallization at 105-110‹ C. into the mould and, whilst cooling, is stirred by means of chains 13 carrying cylindrical or spherical masses 12 which are given a reciprocating movement by a crank and linkage mechanism.
