Abstract

650,779. Liquid electrode apparatus. NORA, O. DE. June 27, 1947, No. 17057. Convention date, Jan. 10. [Class 41] An electrolytic mercury cathode cell, e.g. for the electrolysis of brine has the inert lining of the surface over which the mercury flows formed of slabs of natural or artificial siliceous material composed mainly of silica and silicates such as polished granite, stoneware, or porcelain and the bottom of the cell has raised borders 1<SP>1</SP> and rounded corners 2. Contact with the mercury cathode is made by steel discs 4 inserted through the inert bottom from beneath and so positioned that their upper surfaces are a few millimeters beneath the inert bottom so that even should there be no mercury on the inert bottom there is always a thin protective layer of mercury on the discs 4. The transverse profile of the cell bottom may be slightly and gradually depressed at the centre.
