[Class 39 (i)] Relates to ignition devices for rectifiers &c. with liquid mercury cathodes of the type in which a rod of semi-conducting material dips into the mercury pool, and consists in making the surface of the rod smooth. The surface may be polished, or formed by producing the semi-conductor in the form of a glaze on a smooth body. Alternatively, a rod of insulating material such as glass or quartz, finely polished, may have applied to its surface a thin layer of burnt-in platinum of such thickness that its resistance corresponds to that of a semiconductor.
