Abstract
894,770. Electrolytic cells. ORONZIO DE NORA IMPIANTI ELETTROCHIMICI. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 31, 1957], No. 39861/58. Class 41. An electrolytic cell comprises an elongated trough, a cover, a set of anodes, a flowing metal cathode, e.g. of mercury, and a cathode contact surface in the trough base comprising alternate longitudinal conductive and non-conductive surfaces 9A, 5A, respectively, the conductive surfaces 9A being lower and narrower than the surfaces 5A. The surfaces 5A may be stone slabs set in concrete 6, the surfaces 9A being the cross-pieces of steel T- bars. The slabs 5A may have grooves 50 or ridges to direct mercury to the surfaces 9A which may have riffles 48 to maintain the mercury layer when the flow of mercury is stopped. Alternatively, the base of the trough may comprise parallel conductive and non- conductive strips, or a steel base may support spaced parallel strips of resin material. Hard rubber and concrete are mentioned as materials which may comprise the non-conductive surfaces. The cell is constructed generally as described in Specification 894,769 as regards the flexible cover, anode supports and connections, and mercury and amalgam circulation. The cell may be employed for a fused-electrolyte process, the liquid cathode being the metal produced. Swiss Specification 297,829 also is referred to.
