Abstract

675,688. Electrode supports for electrolytic cells. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 7, 1951 [Feb. 7, 1950], No. 3118/50. Addition to 627,349. Class 41. An electrode assembly suitable for use in electrolytic cells using a mercury cathode comprises a mass or masses of electrically-conducting material substantially supported within the cell by a series of relatively small bodies made of insulating material and shaped so as to make edge contact only with the supported electrode, a relatively small body of metal which is capable of being wetted by the mercury, being located between each of the insulated bodies and the cell base-plate. As shown, an anode mass 8 is supported on bodies 1 of insulating material which have stems 4 protruding into holes 7 in the mass. The bodies 1 have each a cavity in the base into which fits the stem 6 of a steel peg. 2. The base of the peg rests on the cell base-plate 9. The stem 6 may alternatively be screwed into the body 1 or secured thereon by cement.
