Abstract

674,731. Electrodes for electro-chemical cells. C.D. PATENTS, Ltd. April 11, 1950 [April 29, 1949], No. 11505/49. Class 41. [Also in Group XI] A composite carbon electrode suitable for example in the electrolytic production of chlorine and fluorine gases, comprises a relatively thin sheet or layer of hard impermeable carbon cemented to a block of electro-graphitic carbon of high electric conductivity, the latter acting as the main lead-in or currentcarrying device. The impermeable carbon may be produced by the process described in any of Specifications 619,967, 648,539, 651,435 and 673,003, [all in Group V]. The cementing of the two bodies may be effected by a method such as described in Specification 620,998, [Group II]. As shown, hard impermeable carbon 15 is of tubular form with a closed end 16 and an electro-graphitized carbon rod 17 is cemented centrally inside.
