Abstract
925,870. Making fluorine electrolytically. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 9, 1962 [April 5, 1961], No. 12214/61. Class 41. Fluorine is made by electrolysis of a fused melt of KF and HF, using as anode a carbon element of which the upper part is electrode carbon of low gas permeability, and preferably not exceeding 0.05, and the lower part is of high permeability, e.g. at least 0.5 up to 1, the junction being below the level of the electrolyte. Preferably the electrolyte is KF and 1.8 to 2.2 of HF and temperature is maintained at 80 ‹ to 110‹ C. The fluorine produced contains 4.6% by vol. of HF, compared with 7 to 10% using a carbon anode of permeability 1 throughout. In a suitable apparatus, a heated jacketed steel cell 1, has mounted therein a carbon anode of low permeability at the upper part 3, and high at the base 2, which is surrounded by a gas impermeable cylinder 5 extending below the junction of the two anode components. A cathode 6 of steel or copper. Fluorine is led off through a pipe 11, and hydrogen through a pipe 12. The electrolyte is added through a pipe 13 to a level above the junction of the two anode elements.
