Abstract

A process and cell as in the parent Specification for electrolytically producing fluorine from a fused mixture of potassium fluoride and hydrogen fluoride having a composition of KF:HF of 1:1.8 to KF:HF of 1:2.2 is modified in that the electrolyte also contains at least 30 p.p.m. Ni salts (e.g. up to 200 p.p.m.) expressed as Ni and at least 0.1% by weight of water (e.g. up to 1%) on the weight of the electrolyte. The cell has a gas permeable carbon anode surrounded at its upper part by a gas impermeable barrier and may have a thermostatically controlled water, steam or electrical heating jacket.
