Abstract
932,946. Smelting aluminium, electrolytically. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. June 22, 1959, No. 21018/59. Addition to 930,832. Class 41. A cell for producing aluminium 17 by electrolysis comprises a chamber having walls 14 composed of silicon carbide and at least one cathodic current-conducting element 20 extending into the lower part of the chamber and having at least that part of the surface of the elements 20 which contact the aluminium 17 composed essentially of one at least of the materials of the group consisting of the carbides and borides of Ti, Zr, Ta, and Nb. The walls 14 are at least in part composed of silicate bonded silicon carbide and may include portions of silicate bonded and nitride bonded silicon carbide as indicated at 14a, 14b respectively. The bottom of the cell has an insulating lining 12 and a refractory floor 16, e.g. of carbon, alumina, silicon nitride or carbide, and the lining 12 may extend up the side of the cell or terminate in a castable refractory base member 26, e.g. of calcium aluminate. Prebaked or Soderburg anodes may be employed. Specification 784,696 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 802,905.
