Abstract
Cellulose derivative compositions for coating paper to produce magnetic recording material comprise magnetizable particles such as magnetite powder mixed with (a) cellulose acetate, triphenyl phosphate, and methyl ethyl ketone; or (b) nitrocellulose of low viscosity, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, dibutyl phthalate, and blown castor oil. Vinyl resin compositions for the same purpose comprise similar magnetizable particles, polyvinyl acetate or a copolymer of acrylic and methacrylic esters dissolved in toluene or ethyl alcohol. Optional additions are glycerine, tannin, and the acetate of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether.ALSO:Magnetite powder for use in magnetic recording tapes is made by heating to 125 DEG F. in an autoclave a 15 DEG B<\>ae. aqueous solution of ferrous sulphate, adding aqueous sodium hydroxide while stirring, heating to 250 DEG F. while the pressure is allowed to rise to 60 lbs. per sq. inch above atmospheric, and bubbling air through the contents of the autoclave for 2 hours. The oxide is separated by filtering, dried, and pulverized.
