Abstract

922,906. Magnetic compositions. BURROUGHS CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 29097/59. Class 38 (2). A magnetic composition for coating magnetic tapes comprises an aqueous vehicle containing a dispersing agent, at least 7.5% by weight of discrete resin particles in the form of a synthetic latex dispersion, at least 20% by weight of iron oxide particles in suspension and at least 0.4% by weight of a water-soluble algin. The resin may be polystyrene-butadiene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylidene chloride or an acrylic resin. The iron oxide may be γFe 2 O 3 or Fe 3 O 4 . The algin may be sodium alginate or ammonium alginate. The dispersing agent may be condensed naphthalene sulphonate and/or sodium polyphosphate. Polyethylene glycol monooleate may be included to improve physical properties and sodium benzoate as a preservative. Cosein as a protective colloid, and an antifoaming agent such as pine oil octyl alcohol or a silicone complex may also be included in small quantities. The size of the resin particles may range between 0.01 and 2 Á. Fe 3 O 4 particles may be acicular and have an average size of 1 Á. In preparation, the iron oxide is stirred into a solution of all the remaining material except the resin, this latter being the final addition. Specification 922,905 is referred to.
