Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a mixture of (1) an aqueous dispersion (55 per cent solids) of polyvinyl acetate (40 to 75 per cent), a plasticizer therefor, water (10 to 35 per cent), casein (2 to 10 per cent) and a preservative, 26 DEG B<\>ae ammonia or methylamine or morpholine (0.2 to 1.02); and (2) 40 per cent formaldehyde (0.025 to 0.6 per cent), 26 DEG B<\>ae ammonia (0.5 to 0.4 per cent), and water (1 to 8 per cent). Plasticizers mentioned are dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate and triacetin. Specified preservatives are phenol, o-phenyl phenol and methyl p-hydroxy benzoate. The particle size of the polyvinyl acetate in the dispersion is preferably below 2 microns. The adhesive is used in adhering metal foil, e.g. aluminium' to paper.
