Abstract

650,242. Electromagnetic relays. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Oct. 20, 1948, No. 27241. [Class 38(v)] The armature of a relay carries a permanent magnet which forms part of two magnetic circuits which hold it firmly in either of its two positions when the coil of the relay is de-energized. The armature is moved to its other position by sending a current through the coil in the reverse direction. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the armature and magnet 25, which is pivoted at 24 is held in the position shown by a magnetic circuit including a soft iron extension 18 of the yoke 10, the effect of this being greater than that of the alternative circuit through the core 12 and yoke 10. On sending a current through the coil 11 so as to produce a N pole at 29, the armature is attracted to the pole 29 and is there held, even after de-energization of the coil 11, by the now greater effect of this second circuit. In a modification, the permanent magnet is fixed to a soft iron member pivoting about a knife edge and lies between two L-shaped arms of soft iron fixed to the yoke, and linked at their lower ends by a crosspiece.
