Abstract

A rust-inhibiting coating is formed on iron reinforcements for concrete by applying a mixture of cement and water, with or without lime, sand or the like, or a mixture of lime, water and sand (shale ash, ground stone, fly ash), to either of which mixtures has been added a binder, preferably a collidal adhesive agent, which delays the final hardening of the coating until the reinforcement has been cast in position, but permits rapid drying of the coating, e.g. by hot air, and imparts sufficient strength thereto to avoid scaling during the handling of the reinforcements. Casein, albumen, bone glue, gelatine, cellulose esters and starch pastes are stated to be suitable binders, and rust-preventing agents, e.g. chromates or bichromates may be added to the mixture which is applied by dipping or spraying. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the iron reinforcements are first coated with a solution of the binder, and a coating of dry cement is then applied. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
