Ornamenting.-In a process for coating wood and other material, such as surfaces of vegetal fibres, with a hard protective covering, the surface, preferably after priming with a thin cement insoluble in water, such as casein lime cement, is coated with a ground layer of thicker cement, and is strewed with quartz sand, emery, glass powder, &c., to which, after drying, is applied an emulsion or filling mass consisting of a drying oil and a watery solution of paste, glue, &c., together with a fine-grained powder of quarte, glass, emery, marb1e, gypsum, &c., and, if desired, a pigment. The treated surface may be coated with one or more 1ayers of nitrocellulose or pyroxy1ine lacquer, and colour, which may be veined, marb1ed, &c., may be applied between two layers of lacquer. Plywood or other wooden panels or sheets mav be left with an uncoated margin, to permit of nailing or screwing, the margin being subsequent1y coated. The joints of such sheets mav be covered with laths coated according to the process, and surfaces already set up, such as wooden walls, may be so coated.
