Abstract
649,805. Vehicle undercarriages. HILL, G. B. Nov. 27,1948, No. 30826. [Class 108(ii)] A side car for use with bicycles has one or more wheels out of contact with the ground and another wheel which can either be lowered into contact with the ground for side car use or raised to the level of the other wheels so enabling the side car to be detached and used as a separate vehicle or perambulator. The adjustable wheel comprises a fork 3, fixed to the side car body, the limbs of which comprise a pair of lugs 7 to which is pivoted the limbs of a forked hand lever 6. The wheel axle 4 is journalled in the forked lever 6 and by raising or lowering the lever the vertical position of the wheel is adjusted, the axle riding in slots 5 in the wheel fork and being secured in the desired position by wing nuts 13. A locking device for ensuring that the wheel cannot move from its selected position comprises a vertical bar 8 pivoted at its lower end to one limb of the forked lever 6, and carrying at its upper end a locking pin 10 which can be screwed into either of a pair of threaded holes 11 in the mounting bracket. The vehicle body may be provided with a handle which is folded down when used as a side car and which is raised when the body is used as a separate vehicle; the handle may be interconnected with the wheel-operating lever 6 so that when the handle is folded down the wheel is lowered.
