Abstract
649,784. Electromagnetic track brake. FREINS JOURDAIN-MONNERET. Dec. 22, 1947, No. 33758. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1946. [Class 103 (i)] In an electromagnetic track brake for railway vehicles of the type wherein each shoe 1 comprises a series of tread elements 18 arranged end to end, to minimize longitudinal air gaps between the shoe and the rails caused by roughness in the rail surface, the elements are hinged to one another in such a way as to permit them to be displaced in the vertical plane both pivotally with respect to each other, and normally with respect to the rail, and to minimize transverse air gaps, the shoes 1 are suspended in a way that provides for their lateral displacement. These characteristics are obtained by providing the elements 18 with flats 20a between the curved parts of the notches 20 that engage the hinge pins 19, each end element 18a, 18b being also pivoted to the shoe web 1 by a pin 19b passing through an enlarged hole 20b and by suspending each shoe 1 by hinge links 11, 11a, pivoted to a transverse beam 10 resiliently mounted on the vehicle underframe by springs 4. Reference is made to French Specifications 802,215 and 820,150 in which are described brakes that are similar, but do not provide for the same degree of displacement of the tread elements as in the present invention.
