Abstract
649,772. Reciprocating pumps. SCHERER, R. P. July 21, 1947, No. 19495. Convention date, June 24, 1940. [Class 102(i)] [Also in Group V] A machine for making fluid-filled hermetically-sealed capsules includes a metering device for discharging regulated amounts of fluid between sheets of capsule shell forming material, the device comprising (a) a pair of pumping devices each including a pump chamber and a pump plunger therein, (b) a support for each plunger, (c) means for connecting the supports together, (d) means acting upon the connection to reciprocate the plungers, and (e) means for adjusting the connection to vary the distance between the supports and thus vary the strokes of the plungers in their respective chambers. Five liquidforcing pistons 112 working in pump cylinders 124 are carried by a frame 84 having side arms 88 bridged by a crossbar 96, and five similar pistons 114 working in pump cylinders 126 are carried by another frame 86 that fits telescopically within the frame 84. The frame 86 has two crossbars 92. 94. The two frames are adjustably joined together by a screw-threaded shaft 100 extending between the frame 84 and the crossbar 92. The frames are reciprocated horizontally, to reciprocate the plungers 112, 114, by a crank-shaft 72 carrying a bearing 76 fitting within a yoke 78 guided by arms 80 sliding in bearings 82. As the yoke 78 reciprocates horizontally it engages the crossbars 94, 96 alternately to move the frames 86, 84, respectively. The distance through which the frames, and hence the plungers 112, 114, are moved by the yoke may be varied by varying the distance between the crossbars 94, 96, and this distance is varied by turning a sleeve 10 in which the shaft 100 is threaded. The shaft may be locked in postion by a screw shaft 106 expanding a split section of shaft 100. Liquid to be enclosed in capsule material (gelatin) falls from vat 28 through channels 132 into cylinders 124, 126. and is delivered .by the pistons through channels 134 and pipes 24 to feeder head 26. The blocking and unblocking of the channels necessitated by the facts that both the feed and the discharge channels lead into one end of a cylinder and the two sets of pistons discharge alternately is effected by by a slide valve 136 having passages 133. 135. The pistons are lubricated by pressure oil fed through ducts 212, this oil forming a seal between the cylinders 124, 126 and the atmosphere. The feeder head 26 is carried by two arms 174 pivoted at 172 on the pump unit 22.
