Abstract
15,401. Thomas, J. Nov. 1. Auxiliary actuating- gear; cam - actuated pumps; lever-actuated pumps; double-acting bucket - pumps; multiple-delivery bucket pumps; combined piston and bucket pumps; pumps in series; regulating delivery by closing suction valves; suction reservoirs; v a l v e s , arrangement of. - A mechanical lubricator comprises one or more double-acting pumps in which a single valve, preferably cylindrical, is positively moved by the pumping strokes of two plungers. In the form shown in Fig. 1, two double-acting pumps are combined, each comprising two parallel tubular plungers 4, 4 and 5, 5 working respectively in chambers 16, 9 and 16, 9. The plungers 4, 4 are connected by a crosshead 22, and the plungers 5, 5 by a double cross-head 23, in which rotates the actuating cam or eccentric 33. The plungers 4, 5 are in alinement and connected by a hollow member 6 containing a chamber 12, in which the cylindrical valve 13 works. The pump chambers 16, 16 are formed in adjustable screws 17 mounted in the walls of the reservoir, and the chambers 9, 9 in a stationary member 7 mounted in the reservoir. The chamber 12 is connected to the chambers 9, 9 by ports 14, 15 and passages 14, 15, and with the chambers 16, 16 by the passages 11. During the suction stroke of the plunger 4, oil enters the chamber 16 through the port 18 or channels in the outer surface of the plunger, and during the return stroke, this oil passes through the passage 11 and forces the valve 13 to the right and passes through the duct 14 to the chamber 9. During the next suction stroke of the plunger 4, half of the oil in the chamber 9 is forced through the plunger 4 into the delivery pipe 21, and half fills the space 20 evacuated by the outer part of the plunger which has half the crosssectional area of the part working in the barrel 9. During the next return stroke of the plunger 4, the oil in the space 20 is forced into the pipe 21. The same series of operations take place in the other pump 5, 5. The crosssectional area of the outer end of the plunger 4 is the same as that of the inner end of the plunger 4. The eccentric 33 is driven from the shaft 38 through ratchet gearing. The cam shaft 34 may be actuated by a hand-whee! for flushing purposes. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, two plungers 43, 43 are in alinement and connected to an intermediate piece 6 reciprocating in a bearing 46 screwed into the wall of the reservoir. Oil enters the pump chambers 44, 44 through channels 55, 55 in the plungers and, on the delivery strokes, passes through the ports 48, 48 to the delivery pipe 51. The plungers are reciprocated by a lever 59 actuated by a cam &c. 33 driven as before described. In both forms, the delivery may be regulated by adjusting the screws 17, 17 &c. so as to vary the point at which communication between the pump chambers 16 &c. and the reservoir is cut off during the delivery strokes. A number of pumps may be mounted in the same reservoir.
