[Class 28(i)] In electric toasters comprising one or more heating elements, at least one material carrier mounted for movement into and out of a toasting position, spring means capable of being stressed to permit localtion of the carrier in its toasting position and pneumatic means for effecting a delayed release of said spring means whereby the carrier is automatically moved to its inoperative position, the or each carrier has a vertically-guided movement into and out of its toasting position. In an embodiment bread carriers 17 secured to a plate 19 slidable on guides 20 are forced downwardly against a spring-loaded lever 23 engaging a flange 21 of the plate, into toasting position by a U-shaped lever 26 pivoted at 27 and having lugs 29 engaging a further plate flange 22. A counterweighted catch 32 passes through a slot 34 in the toaster base and locks the carriers in the operative position, and the electric heating circuit is simultaneously completed by a contact 30 engaging a fixed contact 31. Depression of the arm 26 raises a bridge piece 46 thereon, forcing a cylinder 40 upwardly in relation to a fixed piston 39 on a stem 36, against a spring 42. The bridge piece 46 is held against the cylinder by a spring 50, and the time of return of the cylinder is governed by the admission of air through an orifice 48 containing a needle valve 51 which is adjusted by rotating a knob 58. When the lever rises sufficiently for a lug 29 to engage the counterweight 35 of the catch, a hole 47 in the cylinder passes below the piston and the cylinder moves sharply to the end of its stroke; the catch 32 is released, the carriers 17 rise and the electric circuit is broken.
