(Cl. 29-11) This invention relates to devices for forming articles and more particularly to devices for forming hinge portions.
An object of this invention is to provide a device for forming portions of a hinge around a hinge pintle.
One embodiment of the present invention may include a base for supporting a plate having elevated preformed portions which are to be bent around a hinge pintle. A movable lower die pivoted to the base and having a forming surface is positioned between the plate and the elevated preformed portions whereby the plate supports the die and its forming surface supports the preformed portions. An upper die is moved downward to cooperate with the lower die to bend the preformed portions around the pintle which is positioned on the preformed portions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent by reference to the following detailed description and the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of the invention, in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing the lower die positioned between the plate and its prefomed portions prior to a bending operation;
Fig. 2 is a plan view taken on line 2--2 of Fig. 1 showing the plate with its elevated preformed projections supported in work position relative to the hinge pintle; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the assembled plate and pintle after the bending operation.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, a base 11 is shown supporting a block 12 having an inclined L-shaped surface 13 for supporting an L-shaped plate 16 which has secured to it L-shaped strips 17. The strips 17 have preformed arcuate portions 18 which are spaced above the plate 16 and which are to be bent around a hinge pintle 21. A lower die 22 pivoted to the block 12 by a pin 23 is provided with a forming surface 26 which is positioned beneath the preformed portions 18, the lower die 22 being supported upon the plate 16 and underneath the preformed portions 18. The pintle 21 to be secured to the strips 17 is manually positioned in the preformed portions 18 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
An air cylinder 28 secured to a bracket 29 (Fig. 1) mounted on the base 11 is provided with a piston 30 secured to a depending ram 33 whereby actuation of the piston 30 moves the ram 33. An upper die 34 having a curved forming surface 35 positioned above the pintle 21 is secured to the ram 33 for movement with it. When the upper die 34 is lowered its forming surface 35 engages the preformed portions 18 of the L-shaped strips 17 and cooperates with the forming surface 26 on the lower die 22 to bend the preformed portions 18 of the strips 17 completely around the pintle 21 as illustrated in Fig. 3. A pair of upright guide rods 38 (Fig. 1) secured to the base 11 pass through apertures 39 in a plate 40 carried by the upper die 34 for maintaining it in alignment with the pintle 21.
In operation, the pivoted lower die 22 is moved to insert it between the preformed portions 18 and the plate 16, and a pintle 21 is positioned on the preformed portions 18 whereby the forming surface 26 of the lower die 22 is directly beneath the pintle 21 and the preformed portions 18. The lower die 22 and the plate 16 supported thereon are then pivoted about the pin 23 to position the plate 16 on the inclined surface 13 of the block 12 in work position.
Compressed air (from a source not shown) is then admitted to the air cylinder 28 to move the piston 30 downward. The upper die 34 moves downward into engagement with the preformed portions 18 and the forming surfaces 26 and 35 on the lower and upper dies 22 and 34, respectively, cooperate to bend the preformed portions 18 completely around the pintle 21.
The piston 30 is then actuated to raise the upper die 34 whereupon the assembly is removed from the device, whereupon another hinge plate 16 with its L-shaped strips 17 is mounted on the block 12 and the above procedure is repeated.
It is to be understood that the above-described arrangements are simply illustrative of the application of the principles of this invention. Numerous other arrangements may be readily devised by those skilled in the art which will embody the principles of the invention and fall within the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for forming components of articles, comprising a base for supporting a first component of the article having a portion spaced therefrom to be formed, a lower die pivoted to the base and adapted to be positioned between the first component and its portion, a bracket secured to the base, a movable upper die supported by the bracket and having a forming surface spaced from said lower die for cooperating with it to bend said portion around a second component of the article, and means for actuating the upper die.
2. A device for assembling a plate and pin, comprising a base for supporting a plate having portions to be bent around a pin positioned thereon, a lower die pivoted to the base and adapted to be interposed between the plate and the portions, a bracket, a die mounted on the bracket and movable to engage said portions to bend them around the pin, means for moving the upper die, and means for maintaining the upper die in alignment with the lower die.
3. A device for assembling plates and pins, comprising a base having a surface for supporting a plate which has angular strips secured thereto, a lower die pivoted to the base and adapted to be positioned between the plate and its strips, a bracket supported on the base, an upper die movably supported by the bracket for engaging portions of the strips to bend them around a pin supported thereon, means supported by the bracket for actuating the upper die, an apertured guide plate carried by the upper die, and means mounted on the base and extending through the apertures in the guide plate for maintaining the upper die in alignment with the lower die.
4. A device for forming an article having a projection secured to one edge thereof and terminating in a free end spaced from the other edge thereof, comprising a base for supporting the article, a movable first die mounted on the base and adapted to be supported by the article in a position interposed between the article and the free end of said projection, a second movable die spaced from the first die for cooperating with said first die to form the free end of the projection, and means for actuating the second die.
