Abstract

709,443. Embossing machines. SETRIGHT REGISTERS, Ltd. July 15, 1952 [July 19, 1951], No. 17184/51. Class 100 (2). (Also in Groups V and VIII] A press suitable for applying labels to garments but which may be adapted for printing or embossing, comprises a plunger adapted to apply pressure and, if desired, heat, a carriage which can be moved into and out of a position beneath the plunger, and which on reaching the position causes the plunger to descend, and a timing device which is released by the carriage on reaching the position and after a predetermined period causes the plunger to rise, and which is reset on movement of the carriage out of the position. As shown, a garment to be labelled is laid over a pillar 18 mounted on a carriage 2 which has rollers 6 running on a track 8 between stops 114 and 36. The part of the garment to be labelled is placed over a rubber insert in the top of pillar 18 and is held in place by a centrally apertured plate 24 carried by arms 26 pivoted at 28 to brackets 30 extending upwards from the carriage, and urged into either the plain or dotted line position by telescopic spring-loaded links 32. A label with a fusible backing is placed in the central opening in plate 24. The table is then pushed by hand until stopped by stop 36. In the latter part of this movement a tappet 84, mounted on the carriage 2 engages a lever 86 pivoted in a fork 88 and rocks it clockwise, while a second lever 92 pivoted in a fork 94, and connected to 86 by a pin and slot connection 90, is rocked anti-clockwise against the action of spring 96. A pin 100 on lever 86 strikes, during the rocking movement,. the operating arm of a switch 80 thus completing the circuit through switches 80 and 82 in series, and a solenoid 54. Energization of solenoid 54 causes a cross-head 60 to move to the left against the, tension of a spring 56, whereupon, through a toggle mechanism 66, 68, 70 a heated pressure plunger 38 descends and presses the label, while at the same time a roller 102 on the cross-head engages lever 92 thus ensuring that switch 80 will not open. The rocking of lever 86 also takes it clear from a pin 104 on a bar 106 which is now drawn to the right by spring 108 at a speed which is limited by clockwork contained in a housing 110 from which it projects. Just before pin 104 engages lever 86 in its new position, a second pin 112 on bar 106 strikes the operating arm of switch 82 to open the switch, The solenoid 54 is de-energized, the cross-head 60 is drawn to the right by spring 56, and the plunger is raised. The pressing time is determined by the clockwork mechanism and by the initial position of bar 106 which depends on the setting of an eccentric stop 98 for lever 86. The carriage 2 is now drawn to the right by hand or a spring 12, spring 96 overcomes spring 108 and restores levers 86 and 92 to their starting positions, and switch 80 opens before 82 closes. Movement of the bar 106 to the left is not prevented by the clockwork mechanism. The plunger may be moved hydraulically instead of electrically. Labels may be fed mechanically into position. The temperature of the plunger may be controlled by thermostat.
