Abstract
648,650. Sharpening safety-razor blades. CARTER. W. H., and PATCH, A. W. B. Aug. 12, 1948, No. 21247. [Class 60] The blade holder 17 of an appliance for sharpening razor blades is reciprocated longitudinally of a sharpening surface 3 and during each longitudinal stroke receives a plurality of lateral movements in one direction and a plurality of lateral movements in the opposite direction. A trolley 9 runs between pairs of rails 5 and 6 on grooved rollers 20 which are journalled at the ends of spring-biassed levers. To improve stability, the wheelbase of the upper rollers is greater than that of the lower rollers. A static cam 8 is provided to reciprocate a carriage 14 which is guided for transverse movement on the trolley by rollers 25 and formed with an arm 26 carrying a roller 27 in engagement with the cam. Two similar rollers are journalled at the ends of a lever 28 connected with the arm by a spring 30. The carriage has fulcra 16 to support the blade holder which is slotted at its lower ends to receive pins on a hand-lever 34 pivoted at 35 to the trolley 9. This hand-lever is used to reciprocate the trolley and, when the direction of the latter is reversed, it serves to reverse the inclination of the blade holder; its movement being limited by extensions 36, 37 striking the roller axles which thereby act as stops. The blade holder may comprise a hinged resilient arm 41, Fig. 8, having a spheroidal projection to engage the central hole of the blade, the outer holes being engaged by pins 44 in the holder 17. The form of the cam may be other than that shown.
