Abstract

648,377. Agglutinated fibrous material. HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY CORPORATION. March 17, 1947, No. 7336. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1946. [Class 140] A method of forming an agglutinated fibrous material suitable for padding or air filters wherein fibres are fed to a batt-forming mechanism, a bonding agent is sprayed on the fibres and air pressure is applied to the fibres upon arrival at the batt-forming location, is characterized in that the air pressure is regulated to control the density of the resultant bath. The material may be supplied in the form of a sliver which may be crimped, cut into short lengths and carded before being delivered to an oscillating shoot and formed into a batt, using apparatus identical with that described in Specification 648,380, or alternatively the fibrous material may be delivered from a shoot 40 into a mould 36, the air and bonding material, preferably a vinyl resin, being applied from a pair of atomizing nozzles 41. The moulds 36 are rotatably mounted on a table 29 which is journalled in a pedestal 28 and intermittently rotated by a motor 30. As each mould comes beneath the shoot 40, the table 29 remains stationary whilst the batt is formed. A spur-wheel 39 mounted on the shaft 38 carrying the mould engages at this point a wheel 34 driven from a continuously-operating motor 32 so that the mould is rotated to ensure uniform packing of the material. The pressure of the air from the spray which may be varied, regulates the density of the finished batt, the bottom 37 of each mould being perforated to allow the passage of air. To form a hollow cylindrical batt, a core may be placed in the mould. The fibrous material may be metal, or of animal or vegetable origin, and prior to being brought to the batt-forming location may be impregnated with a water solution of ammonium sulfamate to render it flameproof.
