Abstract

1,059,341. Coatings. WHITEHEAD CHEMICAL CO. and G. B. ANGUS. Aug. 2, 1963 [July 28, 1962] No. 29084/62. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] A material, e.g. carpet, is impregnated by a substance, e.g. rubber latex, by being passed between means for supplying the impregnant in atomised form and means for causing a pressure difference across the material, atomised impregnant thus being entrained in the stream of gas passing through the material. The stream of gas is established before the impregnant is entrained therein. As shown, a frame 12 which has suction nozzles 13 beneath and a hopper-like member 11 above, is adapted to receive carpet material for treatment. Rubber latex is fed to atomising heads above the hopper 11 and the atomized latex is drawn through the hopper 11 into the carpet material under the action of the nozzle 13. The atomising heads are adjustable relative to the hopper 11 which is adjustable relative to the frame 12. An adjustable baffle 17 is provided in the ducting 14 which connects the nozzles 13 with the suction fan 15 and which may control the degree of penetration of the impregnant. Carpet delivery and removal conveyors may be positioned adjacent the frame 12. A detailed example is given of a carpet treatment with a particular rubber latex composition.
