647,954. Discharge lamps; cathode proeessing. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. July 29, 1947, No. 20499. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1940. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] The coiled-coil filamentary tungsten cathode of an electric discharge lamp comprising a minor coil wound into a major coil, has an alkaline earth oxide filling, which solely and entirely fills the space within the minor coil and does not extend substantially beyond the outer surface of the turns of the minor coil, the space within the major coil being empty. A suspension of the filler material is applied to the filament by dipping, spraying or preferably by means of an eye-dropper. It is then passed over an air jet, to blow off the material not located within and between the turns of the mirror coil. A series of cathode-heating steps may then be employed to cause the filler material to shrink from the outer surface of the coil, and to expose the tungsten wire to serve as focal points for the discharge.
