647,656. Cycle pedals. BREVETS SOUHART SOC. ANON. Dec. 24, 1947, Nos. 34160 and 34161. Convention dates, Nov. 22, 1940 and Feb. 11, 1941. [Class 136 (ii)] A pedal comprises a head 8 rotatable on ball bearings 14, 15 about an axis perpendicular to the crank arm and a pedal body 1 including a foot bearing surface 2, secured rigidly to the head in such a way that the foot bearing surface is on a level with the axis or slightly below it. The head 8 of the pedal forms a double cage constituted by a collar having two ball races 11, 12 for balls 14, 15 separated by a partition 13. The balls 15 also bear on races 16 carried by a spindle 18 screwed on the end of a crank arm 19, The balls 14 bear on races 17 carried by a cage 20 screwed on the end of the spindle away from the crank arm. This end is split and the cage 20 is locked in position by a screw 23 engaging in an axial passage tapped in the spindle, having a conical head 24 which when the screw is screwed into position, forces the split free end of the spindle into blocked engagement with the cage. A washer 25 is disposed between the head 24 of the screw and the spindle 18. Alternatively, the head may be secured to a spindle rotatably mounted in a ball race in the crank arm 19.
