Abstract

418,415. Yielding-drive attachments. GAULD, J. C., 20, Lufberry Avenue, Lincoln Gardens, New Brunswick, New Jersey, U.S.A. April 13, 1934, No. 11140. [Class 83 (iii).] A machine attachment for setting studs &c. comprises a cylindrical body f secured to a driving shank a and provided with recesses 1-3, Fig. 3, coacting with balls and three circular recesses in a holder g to form a yielding clutch. The clutch parts are normally pressed together by a spring c acting through a ball thrust bearing h, the ball in the recess 3 lying at the end x<1> of the recess, but when the stud bottoms, the balls in the recess 1, 2 rise out of the recesses and that in the recess 3 moves to the end y<1> of the recess. The clutch is thus disengaged and remains disengaged until the drive is reversed, since at least one of the balls is out of its recess in the holder g at any instant anc serves to hold the clutch parts separated. On reversal of the drive, the ball in the recess 3 returns to the end x<1> and the holder is rotated in the reverse direction. The compression of the spring c is adjusted by a nut n and cross-pin b slidable in a slot b of the body f. The holder g is retained in position by a cap y screwing on the body f and a ball-bearing k, a lubricant retainer being provided at j. The cap y may be extended to form an additional bearing for the holder g. Stud-boxes.-The stud-box e is secured to a shank d retained on the holder g by a ball clutch o of known construction and is provided with a ball-bearing s engaging the end of the stud to prevent binding on withdrawal. The ball-bearing has lateral play to allow for eccentricity of the end of the stud, and has a central hole m to clear any protuberances which may exist on the studs.
