Abstract

647,502. Drying grass. BUTTERLEY CO., Ltd., NEWMAN, H. R., and FOSTER, F. H. Oct. 27, 1947, No. 28603. [Class 34(ii)] A grass drier comprises an elevator, a wilting chamber, a crushing chamber, a drying chamber and a cooling chamber through each of which the grass passes in turn. Grass is delivered by an elevator a to the wilting chamber where it falls on to a shelf f comprising a number of tines fixed to the walls of the chamber; a series of revolving intermeshing tines c then comb the grass along the chamber and back again to an opening d and hot air which enters through louvres circulates through the grass. The grass then falls through opening d on to endless belts g, g<SP>1</SP> and passes between crushing rollers j, j<SP>1</SP>, hot air entering the chamber through ducts f<SP>1</SP> and the moisture from the crushing process is collected in sump n. From the crushing chamber the grass enters the drying chamber through the opening o and falls on to the shelf b<SP>1</SP> from which it is combed along the chamber and back again by tines c<SP>1</SP>, jets of hot air passing through the louvres p on to the grass. From the drying chamber the grass is transferred to the cooling chamber w through which it is combed by tines and subjected to cool air before reaching the delivery shoot q. The crushing rolls may be replaced by radially placed rolls bearing on a circular platform.
