Abstract

<PICT:0379294/III/1> <PICT:0379294/III/2> A method of extracting oil from nuts, copra, seeds, &c. consists in passing the seeds between a pair of conveyer bands disposed about a plurality of alternate fixed and adjustable rollers, the adjustable rollers being adapted to be placed into pressure relation with each pair of adjacent fixed rollers. The bands may, in addition, be passed between rollers in a solvent or alkali bath. As shown in Fig. 1, rollers 2, 3, 4 are mounted in stationary bearings and rollers 9, 10 are mounted on a bell-crank lever 15 pivoted on the axis of the roller 3. An endless belt 20 passes around a pulley 5, under roller 2, over roller 9, under roller 3 and over roller 4 back to pulley 5. Similarly a belt 21 on a pulley 6 passes around the rollers. Grain or seed is supplied by a hopper 22 to a space A between the two belts and is thus crushed between the belts as they pass between the rollers. If oil-bearing seed is being crushed then a chamber 1 surrounds the rollers and is provided with a central partition 25 and a cold and hot oil inlet 23, 24 respectively, the rollers 10, 4 being heated. In Fig. 2, cold, hot and solvent extraction are provided for, the belts 20, 21 passing over rollers 26, 27, 28 in a solvent bath 1a provided with inlet 37 and outlet 38. The oil-laden solvent is pressed out by the rollers 26, 27, 28 and is replaced by fresh solvent, and when the bands pass out of the bath a drying pressure is applied at 30 and the exhausted seed tissue removed by scrapers 35, 36. The inlet 37 and outlet 38 are so adjusted as to allow sufficient solvent to enter the bath to absorb the oil in the seed tissue. The belts may be perforated when grinding grain and may run at different speeds.
