Abstract

414,245. Shelling peas. GALLEY, J. A., Cranbrook School, Edgecliff, and GALLEY, E. V., 22, Jeffreys Street, Milsons Point, North Sydney, both in New South Wales, Australia. Oct. 9, 1933, No. 27819. [Class 28 (ii).] A pea-shelling machine comprises a number of endless resilient bands in spaced parallel relation, and a stationary grid structure consisting of a number of resilient parallel strips, the pods being split open in their passage between the stationary strips and the bands. As shown in Fig. 2, the bands 6 are formed as spaced ribs on a belt 8, and the fixed strips 10 are carried on parallel bars 9 supported by a transverse bar 11. The full pods are fed to the bands over a shoot 12. One of the rollers 4 is attached to a hand crank. The peas are discharged over a tray 14 and the pods are ejected over a shoot 13. In a modification, Fig. 8, the bands 6<1> are mounted on a single rotary drum 4<1>, the fixed strips 10<1> being arcuate to conform with the curvature of the drum. A simple feed shoot or, as shown, an automatic feed may be used, this latter comprising a feed shoot 121 hinged at 23 to the machine frame and resting on a ledge 24, so that it may be temporarily swung upwards ; and a rotary roller 18 having fingers 19 which take single pods from the shoot and deposit them so that they fall between the bands 6<1> and the strips 10<1>. The fingers 22 prevent the pods from falling on to the drum 4<1>. A scraper 17 removes the empty pods from the bands 6<1>. An automatic feed may be used with the construction shown in Fig. 2.
