647,476. Bearings. BEYER, PEACOCK & CO., Ltd., and HADFIELD, J. April 18, 1947, No. 10379. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a pivot centre bearing, particularly for an articulated locomotive or like vehicle, of the type comprising a central shaft 1 adapted to rotate within bearing-blocks 2 and 3, of which one of the blocks, 3, may be adjusted towards or away from the shaft 1 to compensate for wear, hand-operated force amplifying power transmission mechanism is provided, whereby the block 3 may be adjusted from a readilyaccessible position. As shown in Fig. 1, this mechanism comprises a wedge member 5, with an inclined face 3b that engages with a corresponding face on the block 3, the member 5 being movable in the direction of the pivot axis by means of rods 6 having a screwed part 6b on which acts an axially-threaded wormwheel nut 8 adapted to be rotated by a worm 9 on a shaft extending out of the bearing and having an accessible hand wheel fitted on its end. Alternative arrangements in which straight pinion gearing or bevel-wheels are used to rotate the nut 8 are also described. The construction of Fig. 9, in which is shown an arrangement in which a continuous adjustment of the block 3 is effected by means of a spring 17, has been made the subject of Specification 647,519, [Group XXXII]. The construction of the male and female bearing-blocks 1, 2 and 3, per se, forms the subject of a further Specification 647,480.
