Abstract
546,824. Couplings for vehicles. HARROUN, R. W., and PRIBIL, M. K. Jan. 25, 1941, No. 1005. [Class 103 (v)] The draw-bar or frame of a trailer vehicle is movable upwards and downwards relatively to the main frame about a rear hinge against spring resistance and the effective length of the connection between the main frame and the spring is adjustable. Relative pitching movement between adjacent vehicles is thus restrained and on the adjusting device enables partoftheloadofa a vehicle to be transferred to the towing vehicle. The drawframe 28 provided with the usual ball-and-socket coupling device 31 is hinged at 33 on a shaft 27 mounted in the main frame 13. A laminated spring 34 is attached at its ends to the draw-frame 28 and at its middle point is secured a bearing 36 for a screwed spindle 39 adapted to turn in a nut member 42 which is pivoted at 43 at the forward end of a pair of converging bars 16 that are rigidly secured at their rear ends to the main frame 13 and also to a vertical rectangular frame 14, 15 which is also rigid with the main frame. The trailer has a pair of rear wheels and the fork 21 of a self-aligning front wheel assembly pivots about a transverse pivot on a member which turns about a vertical pivot 24 on the frame parts 16. By turning the spindle 39 by the crank 46, trailer load can be transferred to the towing vehicle or the coupling can be relieved of all load to facilitate uncoupling.
