647,429. Stuffing-box substitutes. CRANE PACKING, Ltd. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5784. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1945. [Class 122(v)] In a fluid seal for relatively rotatable structures one of which consists of a shaft 10 and an impeller 11 having formed thereon a cup 22, and comprising a retainer 18a having a cylindrical portion 28a which is a press fit on the surface 19 of the cup, a sealing washer 17 within another cylindrical portion thereof, a sealing diaphragm 26a having an outer region compressed against the retainer and an inner region contacting the washer 17, a shoulder 34 on the retainer for locating it with respect to the edge of the cup 22 and a spring 29 compressed between a recess 30 and the diaphragm 26a to form a 'fluid-tight connection between the diaphragm and washer, an axially slidable rotary driving connection is provided between the washer and the retainer by lugs 24 formed on the retainer extending into slots 25 in the washer, a projection 23 on the retainer extending into the path of movement of the washer to limit the axial movement thereof in one direction.
