Abstract
647,185. Spinning. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., and TREEN, A. S. Aug. 17, 1948, No. 21695. [Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for reducing tubes and the like comprises a number of wiping elements mounted on a head around a longitudinal axis, means for relatively rotating the head and the work and means for adjusting the position of the wiping elements to and from the axis of the head and work. The machine comprises a hollow mandrel 1 rotated by a pulley 4, belt 5 and motor 6, all mounted on a base 7 movable along a table 9 by a hand wheel 10 and rack- and-pinion 30, 29. The end of the mandrel carries three swaging members S each having three operating surfaces 8a, 8b, 8c, any one of which may be brought into operable position according to the diameter of the tube to be reduced. Each of these surfaces is shaped longitudinally of the mandrel as shown in Fig. 4. The tools 8 are mounted on stub axles 12 integral with brackets 13 each having two legs, one pivoted to the mandrel and the other to a member 15 in screw-threaded engagement with the mandrel and adjustable therealong by a. hand wheel 23 so that the stub axles 12 may be inclined towards the axis of the work and mandrel. In operation, the tube whose end is to be reduced is clamped with its end adjacent the tools 8, the mandrel and tools are rotated by the motor 6 and the tools fed over the end of the tube by the hand wheel 10. Specifications 627,793 and 627,815 are referred to.
