[Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXIII] Means for facilitating the accurate adjustment of a slide in a machine-tool comprises either a striker device for imparting a blow to the slide (or to an associated part) or means for vibrating the slide (or an associated part); static friction between the sliding surfaces for the slide is thus reduced. In a centreless grinder the regulating wheel 3 is mounted on a slide 2 adjustable on the base 1; the grinding-wheel 5 and its driving motor 6 are mounted on a slide 4 adjustable on the base 1 by pawl and ratchet mechanism 15 operated by a cylinder 22 to which compressed air is admitted under the control of a manually-operated valve 11; a second valve 12 controls the admission of compressed air to a cylinder 25 containing a ball piston 26 which strikes the lower surface of the grinding-wheel slide 4 or a surface on some member connected thereto. The valves 11, 12 are operated jointly by a button 13 pivotally connected to a beam whose ends are pivoted on the valve spindles; the button is connected to the beam at a point nearer to the valve 11 than to the other valve, so that when the button is pressed the valve 11 is opened before the valve 12, whereby the slide-adjusting mechanism is operated in advance of the striker mechanism. The blow may be imparted along any suitable direction. The slide may be adjusted, and the blow imparted, electrically. Alternatively, means may be provided for vibrating the slide. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the vibration may be produced by a rotary unbalanced mass or by a vibrating hammer operated electrically, pneumatically, hydraulically or mechanically. This subject-matter does not appear in the Speci. fication as accepted.
