Classes 60 and 124 [Also in Group XXIV] A honing tool 3, Fig. 8, is adapted to be oscillated at a high frequency by means of a spring-mass system driven by compressed air. A piston 8 forming an exciter mass is controlled by springs 9 within a,cylinder 6 forming a second mass and having ports for the supply of compressed air. The cylinder 6 is in turn supported by springs 7 within a, member 4 comprising the main oscillating mass of the system and carrying the tool 3 and is supported in a fixed guide 2 for restrained movement by springs 13. Initial displacement of the piston 8, such as by the operation of an auxiliary starting valve, supplies air to one end of the piston to start the system oscillating, which oscillations effect the subsequent control of the air ports in the cylinder 6. The resistance offered to the movement of the tool 3 effects a phase displacement of the piston with respect, to the cylinder which results in a greater opening of the air ports to compensate for increasing resistance. A similar spring-mass system operated by compressed air is shown in Fig. 9 applied to a stamping tool having two operating surfaces 4b, 20 on masses 4a, 6a connected by springs 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP>, 7a and having a spring-controlled exciter piston 8a within a cylinder 6<SP>1</SP> attached to the mass 6a. A holding member 15 with a handle 16 is secured to a ring member 14a between the springs 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP>. A control valve 17 is arranged on the handle 16 to regulate the flow of compressed air from a supply line 18.
