Abstract

644,808. Ironing-boards. NORBURY, F. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29125. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Groups X and XIV] In a combined foldable ironing-board and household steps in which an upper platform member is foldably supported on a stepcarrying frame and a supporting frame, which frames are hinged at their upper ends to the platform and have tie-bars therebetween to limit the opening movement of the frames, an ironing-board is hinged at its one extremity to the platform at the same end as the supporting frame and has struts pivoted to its undersurface which engage means on the supporting frame when it is desired to maintain the board horizontal so that the upper surface of the board is then co-planar with the platform and extends from one end thereof. A step frame A, comprising treads 5 supported between uprights 3, is pivoted to the battens 2 of a platform 1, at 4. A supporting frame B comprising uprights 6, connected by tie-bars 9 to the frame A and braced by bars 8, Fig. 3, is pivoted to the platform 1, at 7. An ironing-board 10 is also pivoted to the side of the platform and can be maintained in a horizontal position by means of a strut frame comprising struts 12 pivoted to blocks 11 on the underside of the board 10, and a cross-batten 14, which abuts a cross-bar 13 on the frame B. The platform is provided with a T-shaped recess 18 in which is fitted a T-shaped sleeve board 16 which may be swung through 180 degrees, about a hinge 17. When the sleeve board 16 is out of the recess 18 it is supported on a T-bar 20 slidable in a slot 21 in the platform. The recess 18 provides a well, in which an iron can be placed, which well is lined with asbestos 19, Fig. 3, or other material. Instead of being hinged to the platform the sleeve board may be slidable therein. The board 10 may be folded against the frame B by raising the board to release the batten 14 from the cross-bar 13. The strut frame lies along the outer underside of the board 10 which is then secured to the frame B by means of a clip 15. The complete unit may be folded so that the platform 1 and the frame B tie against the frame A. When the unit is used for ironing a detachable table may be secured to the steps, comprising a rectangular slatted platform engageable at one end with an upper tread on the frame A and supported by a strut frame pivoted at one end to the platform and resting at its free end on a lower tread of the frame A, so as to support the platform in a horizontal position.
