An ironing board is composed of two sections 1, 7 hingedly connected together by a double pivot hinge or hinges 9, the pivots of the or each hinge being connected by spacing means 10 such that the two sections become spaced apart when one section is folded over the other, as seen in Fig. 4, so as to accommodate a padding 11 folded upon itself, the section 1 being provided with a supporting base 2 carrying or embodying an extension 5 which can be brought out to project and thus provide a support for the section 7, and the extension being adapted to rest on a table or like surface which supports the base. The spacing means is a link of plate form and provides a level connecting portion of the board surface when the board is open. In one example the extension 5 has grooves 4 in its sides for slidably engaging ribs 3 on the portion 2. In modifications, the extension is pivoted to the base to swing in a vertical plane as shown in Fig. 8 (not shown) or a horizontal plane as in Fig. 9 (not shown). In a further example Fig. 10, (not shown), the extension is connected to the base by a lazy tongs device. Swivel-mounted fingers 19 can be turned to support the section 7 in an inclined position (Fig. 3) to enable a portion of a garment to pass underneath. A sleeve board 20 mounted to swivel about the axis of a pillar 21 can be used to hold the section 7 in folded position.
