Abstract
644,524. Multi-rotor helicopters. CIERVA AUTOGIRO CO., Ltd., PULLIN, C. G., and WATSON, K. May 13, 1948, No. 13137. [Class 4] In a multi-rotor helicopter with two or more groups of horizontally spaced lifting rotors, the latter are so arranged that in normal operation their resultant lift vector passes through or close to the centre of gravity of the machine, and each group of rotors is driven by a separate engine independently of the other groups, so that in the event of failure of any engine the others continue to drive the remaining rotors which are disposed in a symmetrical manner with respect to the centre of gravity. In the arrangement shown, the helicopter is provided with four lifting rotors 1, 2, 3, 4 arranged in diamond formation in plan, the forward and rearward rotors 1, 2 being driven by an engine 8 through gearing 11 and a central fore-and-aft shaft 10, while the intermediate side-by-side rotors 3, 4 are driven by a separate engine 9 through gearing 13 and a transverse shaft 12. One-way clutches 14, 15 are provided for the respective engines, or such a clutch may be provided in each rotor hub assembly, to enable the rotors coupled to the engine which fails to auto-rotate and thus generate a symmetrical lift, for which purpose each rotor is provided with conventional cyclic and collective pitch control mechanism.
