Abstract

644,093. Drying-apparatus. SAHUT, CONREUR, & CIE. Dec. 30, 1947, No. 34753. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1943. [Class 34(ii)] Powdered or granular substances to be heated and dried are moved by scrapers 3 upon superposed foraminous or slotted beds 8, 10 so that the substance falls through the apertures from one bed to the next below through a current of hot gases, e.g. flue gases, flowing sinuously around the beds. Moreover the scrapers are attached to one or more endless chains 2 driven by a roller 4 over drums 1. The beds 10 comprise transverse slots which may be sinuous or straight and formed by the variable gaps between separate narrow plates 11. The thickness of the moving layer of substance fed from a top hopper 7 is determined by a loose flap 9 which rests on the substance and, together with a similar flap 16 at the bottom outlet, seals the'apparatus against cold air. Another flap 17 constrains the hot gases to be drawn up by a fan 15 through openings in the portion e, f of the top bed 8, the surface of the substance being moistened by spray racks 18 at this region to retain the dust suspended in the hot gases. The outer walls of the apparatus are built from cast iron sections a b c d, x y z t, i bolted together so that the plant may be easily dismantled and beds removed or added.
